The Subregion Mirandese Plateau

Located in the north of Portugal, the Trás-os-Montes region reveals itself among hills and pronounced valleys in a large area of extension. This is a unique region with special features. Throughout the region the scenery changes rapidly, amidst lush green valleys, or ancient hills covered by a patchwork of woods, or green-grey olive groves, extensive bright green vineyards, or flowering almond trees and other fruit tree.

Located in the southeast of the region of Trás-os-Montes, in the subregion of the Mirandese Plateau is the Douro river that influences the cultivation of vines. In this, the soils are essentially shale, the altitude is around 350 to 600 m, verifying the occurrence of large thermal amplitudes and very low levels of relative humidity, as well as the incidence of winds, such characteristics, associated with the traditional way of conducting the vineyard in a bowl, or willow head, allow for greater control of the vineyard, inhibiting the development of certain diseases and thus allowing a practically biological viticulture.

The Geographic Area covers the municipalities of Miranda do Douro, Mogadouro, Vimioso, Ash Sword to Cinta (parishes of Ovens and Lagoaça), Torre de Moncorvo (Parishes of Carviçais, Felgar, Felgueiras, Larinho, Maçores, Mós and Souto da Velha, excluding the areas belonging to Douro region).
